How Bunplan thinks

Projects, sections, tasks and steps hold the plan. Today shows the day. Sessions and records hold the time.

Bunplan has a few pieces, and everything else builds on them.

Piece What it is Example
Project One goal, with an optional deadline, a color and an optional goal line "Statistics final", due 17 October
Section A heading inside a project, one level deep, for the stages of the work "Chapters 1–4", "Past papers"
Task One piece of work you can plan for a day, time and finish "Review chapter 3"
Step A small, concrete action inside a task "Write three key ideas from memory"

Only a task's title is required. A task can live without a project, without a section and without a day. Sections have no dates and no completion of their own. Steps have no dates, reminders or timers: they're simply the work, in order.

The current step

The current step is the step you're on: the first one you haven't ticked, or the one you choose. It's highlighted so you know where to begin, but it never blocks the others. You can tick steps in any order.

Where a task shows up

The same task can appear in different places, depending on its day and whether it's done.

Where Which tasks
Today Planned for today and not done, plus tasks you finished today under Done today
Earlier Planned for a day that has passed and not done. They keep their date and are never moved for you
Upcoming days Planned for a later day. Tap that day in the week strip on Today
Unscheduled No day yet, and not done
Done Finished. You can reopen a task any time
Archived Archived on its own, or part of an archived project. You can restore it

Nothing in Bunplan turns red or says "overdue". Earlier simply means earlier.

Time: sessions and records

A session is one stretch of timing, from Start to End session. Pausing keeps the same session. A session can belong to a task or be a plain timer with no task. When a session ends, it becomes a record in Records, with its length, start time, task and project.

Ending a session never completes the task, so you can come back to it tomorrow. Completing a task ends its running session.

When you end a session, you can leave a note for next time, like "Start with question 4". It shows on the task and in Where you left off until you start the task again.

One timer at a time

You have at most one unfinished session. With iCloud sync, that's true across all your devices: start on your iPhone and you can pause it from your Mac or your watch.
